I am going to design a unit on energy savings. The students will be presented a problem of too much energy vampirism by technology and appliances and be required to develop solutions.

Logistics
  • Energy Savings
  • 7th grade
  • Science
  • 6 days
Goals
  • Problem:
The average student household is inefficient in energy consumption. Analyze your house and determine ways to save energy and reduce costs.
  • Technology Standard:
(1,4) Gather data, examine patterns, and apply information for decisions making using digital tools and resources.
  • Content Standard:
Matter and Energy Standard 2F: Law of conservation of energy.
Scientific Inquiry Standard 1B: Advances in technology often result in improved data collection and an increase in scientific information.
  • Prerequisite Skills:
The students will need to know the principles of matter and energy. They will have studied circuits and electricity as well. After learning about the topics of matter and energy consumption they will use their knowledge for a home analysis.
  • Objectives, Outcomes, or Framing Question:
By using energy wisely we can save natural resources and money for our daily lives. The use of this lesson is to determine what savings we can gain from our daily use of technology and appliances in our home. The idea of running out of energy is something we want to avoid and this can be done by proactive energy savings.
Outline
  • A webquest will be used to complete notes on the topic.
  • The Energy Hog Challenge will be used to practice calculating a families energy useage, identify phantom loads and energy hogs, and perform a scavenger hunt will be completed at home.
  • The final project will consist of a data table with a Energy Audit of their home. Students will analyze their data for energy waste and propose solutions they can implement at home using a provided data table.
  • The energy savings and proposed solutions to save energy will be posted to a group wiki.

This unit has been adapted from outside resources to fit the needs of my 7th grade classroom.
